Abstract

La obra de Cuevas es muy amplia. En este libro apenas se tocan algunos de los aspectos que él estudió. Una de sus pasiones fue la solución del problema de la transformación de valores a precios (Cuevas, I984a, 1986a). También se preocupó por entender asuntos como la pertinencia de la mercancía patrón sraffiana (Cuevas, 1984b, 1985)1, el sistema de precios, la renta y el funcionamiento de los mercados (Cuevas, 1980, 1986a, 1986c, 1995, I999, 2000a, 2001a, 2003a, 2007a), la sustitución de técnicas (Cuevas, 1994, 2000a), la elección colectiva (Cuevas, 1998), la familia (Cuevas, 2000b), la política económica, el crecimiento y el empleo (Cuevas, 1971, 2003b), la producción cafetera (Cuevas, 1990), las implicaciones de la autonomía de la banca central (Cuevas, 2001d), el capital humano (Cuevas, 1996), la industria (Cuevas, 1986b), los empresarios (Cuevas, 2006, 2007b), la relación entre el derecho y la economía (Cuevas, 2002a), la enseñanza de la economía (Cuevas, 1993, 2001b, 2002b) Y el comercio internacional (Cuevas, 2001f, 2011, 2015). Esta diversidad de temas es la mejor expresión de la mirada comprehensiva que tuvo Cuevas de la teoría económica. En la discusión sobre la transformación de valores a precios calificó, sin modestia, su solución como la "transformación correcta". y se vanagloriaba porque había asumido con éxito el reto planteado por Engels hace más de un siglo, después de la muerte ele Marx y antes de la edición final del tercer tomo de El capital. Por aquellos días, Engels invitó a los economistas a anticiparse a la solución del problema de la transformación que se encontrarla en el tercer tomo2. Las interpretaciones continúan siendo diversas, y el debate que no pierde actualidad tiene momentos de mayor intensidad. La preocupación teórica subyacente es fundamental. Se trata de comprender la función del dinero como medida del valor, una preocupación que ya era explícita en la caracterización de la moneda que propuso Aristóteles. El dinero tiene tres funciones: medida del valor, medio de cambio e instrumento para atesorar.
