Les majors pétroliers vers le multi-énergies : mythe ou réalité ?

Abstract

La déréglementation des marchés du gaz et de l'électricité et leur ouverture progressive offrent aux grandes compagnies pétrolières, en partie déjà présentes dans l'aval gazier, des possibilités de prendre position dans ces industries et de se transformer ainsi progressivement en groupes multi-énergies. Ces opportunités seront-elles saisies ? Le débat est ouvert mais il reste difficile d'avoir à ce jour une opinion tranchée. Si la diversification vers le multi-énergies semble constituer une alternative intéressante pour les grands groupes pétroliers, elle reste soumise à de nombreuses conditions. La spécificité de ces activités qui restent éloignées du "coeur de compétences" des majors pétroliers et leur niveau de rentabilité a priori en deçà de celle recherchée par l'actionnariat de ces groupes plaideraient plutôt pour le statu quo, même si l'existence d'une rente sur la production d'électricité à partir du gaz permet d'envisager le développement de cette filière. En revanche, si la filière hydrogène, particulièrement dans le secteur des transports, devenait crédible et si l'énergie nucléaire parvenait à se banaliser grâce notamment au développement de réacteurs de taille réduite, cette diversification deviendrait alors probablement incontournable.
