Abstract

[eng] Starting Salaries for Young People: The Influence of Status in the First Job . Many young people gain their first professional experience in government-subsidised jobs or apprenticeships. Although these integration methods bring young people into contact with the business world, they pay low wages generally below the minimum wage. Subsequent career paths differ markedly depending on whether an individual has started out in a government-subsidised job (community job, partially reimbursed on-the-job training, etc.) or an apprenticeship. The young people who start out in an apprenticeship subsequently earn a wage equivalent to the young people who have not entered into such a contract, other things being equal. On the other hand, a negative wage gap compared with other employees persists for young people who start out in a government-subsidised job.
