Education and income gradients in longevity: The role of policy

Abstract

Education and income are strong predictors of health and longevity. In the last 20 years, many efforts have been made to understand if these relationships are causal and what the possible role of policy should be as a result. The evidence from various studies is ambiguous: the effects of education and income policies on health are heterogeneous and vary over time and across places and populations. I discuss explanations for these disparate results and suggest directions for future research. Gradients d'éducation et de revenu dans la longévité : le rôle de la politique. L'éducation et le revenu sont de bons prédicteurs de la santé et de la longévité. Au cours des 20 dernières années, de nombreux efforts ont été déployés pour comprendre si ces relations sont causales et quel devrait être le rôle éventuel de la politique en conséquence. Les preuves issues de diverses études sont ambiguës. Les effets des politiques d'éducation et de revenu sur la santé sont hétérogènes et varient dans le temps, selon les lieux et les populations. J'examine diverses hypothèses susceptibles d'expliquer ces résultats hétérogènes et suggère de nouvelles avenues de recherche.
