Abstract

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the main way of lignocellulosic biomass utilization, while the management of digestate from AD has been a major obstacle to the sustainable operation of AD plants. The traditional agricultural application of digestate is restricted due to seasonal and biodegradation limitations. Thermochemical processing can be used as an alternative technology to continuously manage large-scale concentrated AD digestate. This review outlined the current thermochemical technologies for digestate treatment, which are mainly divided into two types: one-pot method (i.e., unseparated solid liquid fraction) and separated treatment of solid digestate. The principle, advantages, bottlenecks, products and application scenarios involved in each thermochemical processing of digestate are provided. In summary, the former saves the energy consumption of solid-liquid separation, but needs to consider the heating of moisture in the thermochemical process; The latter can remove moisture before thermochemical processing, but adds a dehydration unit. Non-negligible costs and immature technologies still restrict the development of commercial for both approaches. Moreover, further integrated strategies for AD and thermochemical technologies are envisaged based on efficient biorefinery and circular economy perspectives.
