Effects of pulsating flow on the performance of multi-channel cold plate for thermal management of lithium-ion battery pack

Abstract

As the heat transfer and energy consumption of cold plate is important for applying in the thermal management of lithium-ion battery (LIB) pack, in this work, effects of pulsating flow and steady flow on the heat transfer and energy consumption of multi-channel cold plate are compared and analyzed. Results show that compare with steady flow, pulsating flow has positive and negative effects on the heat transfer, pressure loss and efficiency index (EI) during the total discharge process. The positive and negative effects of pulsating flow are both stronger with the increase of pulsation amplitude at the fixed pulsation frequency. The positive and negative action periods are changed with the pulsation frequency. Furthermore, the energy consumption of pumping coolant under pulsating flow is firstly decreased to the minimum value with the increase of pulsation amplitude and then it is increased with the continual increase of pulsation amplitude. When the pulsation frequency and amplitude is 3 Hz and 0.3, respectively, the energy consumption of pumping coolant under pulsating flow is the lowest, which is 5.19% lower than that under the steady flow.
