Abstract

L'existence des « managers » dans la littérature remonte à plus de 100 ans, depuis les premiers travaux fondateurs du management comme ceux de Fayol ou Taylor. Pourtant ce terme encore aujourd'hui a une définition floue. Dans un contexte contemporain où le rôle des « managers » est remis en question dans les nouvelles formes d'organisations postbureaucratiques, où les étudiants ne souhaitent plus se qualifier de manager, où l'on invite à adopter une posture de leader plutôt que de « manager », la définition du terme de « manager » semble être d'autant plus capitale. Dans cet article, nous proposons de montrer la variété des conceptions de la notion de « manager » dans l'histoire du management. Autour de 4 familles de pensées : statut, travail, fonction, politique, nous montrons les apports et limites de ces conceptions et nous invitons à aborder de nouvelles approches pour approfondir la question de définition du terme « manager ».
