Inégalités d’éducation et de position sociale au sein des fratries

Abstract

Cet article propose un éclairage empirique sur les inégalités d'éducation et de position sociale qui peuvent exister au sein des fratries sur la base des enquêtes Patrimoine 1998 et 2004 de l'Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques. Si l'appartenance à une fratrie de grande taille réduit le niveau éducatif des enfants, elle est sans effet sur la position sociale à éducation donnée. L'application d'une décomposition de variance révèle que les inégalités dans le niveau moyen d'éducation des fratries excèdent largement les inégalités de diplôme qui peuvent exister entre les frères et les sœurs. S'il en est de même, mais à un degré moindre pour la position sociale, les inégalités intrafamiliales apparaissent plus importantes en France en termes de trajectoire professionnelle qu'en termes de diplôme. Il apparait toutefois très difficile de comprendre les écarts dans la réussite individuelle observés au sein des fratries.
