Locations of labor market entry by German university graduates: is (regional) beauty in the eye of the beholder?

Abstract

Wir untersuchen die Standortentscheidungen von Absolventen deutscher Hochschulen beim Eintritt in den Arbeitsmarkt und ihren Zusammenhang mit Beschäftigungschancen, regionalen Eigenschaften sowie den eigenen geografischen Wurzeln der Absolventen. Etwa die Hälfte der Absolventen verbleibt in der Hochschulregion oder kehrt in die Abiturregion zurück. Darüber hinaus haben die Absolventen eine signifikant höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit, in Regionen zu ziehen, die ihrer Abiturregion in Siedlungsstruktur und Dialekt ähnlich sind, als in weniger ähnliche Regionen. Dieser Befund ist robust gegenüber der Kontrolle für Beschäftigungschancen und räumliche Entfernung. Er deutet darauf hin, dass Absolventen eine Beschäftigung in solchen Region bevorzugen, die derjenigen ähneln, in der sie aufgewachsen sind. Copyright Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2016
