Corporal punishment and praise in Indian schools: Caste-based heterogeneity on children’s cognitive skills

Abstract

This study attempts to examine the effect of corporal punishment and praise by teachers on children’s cognitive skills in India. We advance the literature by exploring the heterogeneity of impact based on caste group. In our study, we find that corporal punishment experienced by a child in school adversely affects their chances of higher cognitive scores while receiving praise has a favorable effect. Further, the absolute impact of corporal punishment and praise differs significantly across different caste groups, and both factors have a higher marginal effect among children of the disadvantaged castes compared to those in advantaged upper caste group.
