Abstract

In this paper we investigate the relationship between economic growth and exchange rate volatility in emerging and developing countries. We pointed out channels of influence of exchange rate volatility on the growth of economies, through investment, trade flows, asymmetric shocks and capital market. A model that relates the economic growth and exchange rate volatility is estimated on a panel data of 90 emerging and developing countries between 1980 and 2007. Estimates show that exchange rate volatility has significant negative effect on economic growth, suggesting the importance of policies that contribute to the greater stability of exchange rates.
