Faut-il encourager les étudiants à améliorer leur orthographe ?

Abstract

Nous proposons une mesure expérimentale de l'impact de l'amélioration de la maîtrise de la langue française sur la réussite à l'Université. L'expérimentation a eu lieu entre 2011 et 2014 auprès d'étudiants entrants en première année de Licence d'Economie et de Gestion dans deux Universités, Marne-La-Vallée et Lille 1. Tout au long du premier semestre universitaire, la moitié de ces étudiants a été fortement encouragée à utiliser la plateforme numérique d'auto-formation à l'orthographe Projet Voltaire, tandis que l'autre moitié avait accès à cette plateforme sans être encouragé à l'utiliser. L'assignation des étudiants dans l'un ou l'autre des deux groupes a été faite de façon aléatoire. Nous exploitons les données d'un échantillon de 849 étudiants qui combine des résultats d'évaluation en orthographe avant-après l'entraînement sur la plateforme et les notes aux examens. Nous montrons qu'effectivement, tant dans les matières littéraires que scientifiques, une meilleure maîtrise du français peut avoir un impact significatif positif sur les résultats universitaires, de l'ordre d'un demi-point à un point de plus dans chaque matière.
