The impact of government intervention in the Australian dairy industry

Abstract

This study assesses the economic impact of existing Australian dairy pricing policies on resource allocation and income distribution among participants in dairy markets. Australia is used as an example because it recently debated eliminating federal intervention in the dairy price discovery process. Results indicate that significant costs and transfers can be attributed to the influence of government intervention. Also, evidence of policy bias favoring producers over consumers is found.
