Firm digitalization as strategic response: An integrated model based on the awareness-motivation-capability (AMC) framework

Abstract

Digitalization is an essential instrument for enterprises to gain competitive advantages. However, existing studies ignore the essential feature of digitalization as strategic response, which emphasis that digitalization is triggered by combination of internal and external factors. This study innovatively introduces internal performance feedback and external competitor behavior into the antecedent research of firm's digitalization, applying the “Awareness-motivation-capability (AMC) framework” as underlying explanatory mechanism. Using unbalanced panel data from 4033 listed companies in China over 14 years between 2007 and 2021 (a total of 33,928 valid observations), this study reveals that a positive impact occurs when performance gaps are lower than aspiration level on firm digitalization, while the opposite effect is observed for performance gaps higher than aspiration. Furthermore, competition intensity shows a U-shaped relationship with firm digitalization. Industry munificence and organizational slack significantly moderates the impact of internal and external strategic signals on firm's digitalization by influencing the awareness, motivation, and capability mechanisms. Drawing on the limited rationality perspective of firm's decision-making and the integrated model of the AMC framework, the paper provides an explanatory framework for the strategic response mechanism and the heterogeneity of firm digitalization, with insights for relevant digital policy design and firm-level decision-making on digitalization.
