The role of digital nomadism in COVID-19 recovery strategy of the tourism sector: Case of Cape Town, South Africa

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions affected the tourism sector in South Africa. Digital nomadism is an example of a new strategy that can help the tourism sector recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper explores government strategies for promoting digital nomadism in the tourism sector. The study used the case of the city of Cape Town to analyse secondary data, e.g., government strategies and media reports using thematic analysis. The findings showed that digital nomadism has the potential to promote innovation, new ways of working, and job creation. However, there are also challenges that recovery strategies must address for digital nomadism to be successful, e.g., delays in the introduction of remote work visas and the lack of clarity about digital taxation. The study contributes to the understanding of the benefits and challenges of digital nomadism in the context of developing countries.
