Exposición prenatal a la violencia y deserción escolar en el largo plazo en Colombia

Abstract

Este documento analiza el impacto que tiene el conflicto armado en Colombia en la deserción escolar. Se muestra específicamente que, la exposición a eventos violentos durante la etapa de gestación incrementa la deserción escolar en educación básica y media. A partir de la información del Ministerio de Educación Nacional, y la base de datos de violencia y conflicto armado, el estudio estima modelos que intentan capturar la relación mencionada. Para corregir los posibles problemas de variable omitida se utilizan los choques de lluvia como instrumento para la actividad armada de los grupos irregulares –esta última es un indicador de la intensidad del conflicto. Los resultados senalan que la exposición al conflicto experimentado por las madres durante su gestación afecta de manera significativa la deserción escolar de sus hijos. Se encuentra, en particular, que un aumento de una desviación estándar en la tasa de conflicto durante la gestación aumenta la probabilidad de deserción en 0.20 puntos.
