Portrait du Québec pour le domaine des mathématiques

Abstract

This report is a factual portrait of the situation of students in Quebec with regard to mathematics. It presents tables that will fuel reflection on STEM in Quebec. Two databases were used to conduct this project on the portrait of Quebec in mathematics. On the one hand, data from OECD international tests related to mathematics and numeracy; in particular the TIMSS and PISA tests. On the other hand, data from the Bureau de la Coopération Interuniversitaire (BCI) in order to be able to comment on a possible shortage of workers in Quebec in the field of mathematics. The report on the mathematical portrait of Quebec is presented in three parts: a first part mainly devoted to data from the OECD databases on primary and secondary students, a second part focusing on the use of data from the BCI on the characteristics of students in the field of mathematics, and, finally, a third part which tends to explore the shortage in the field of mathematics once put in context with fields related to STEM. Ce rapport est un portrait factuel de la situation des étudiants et des élèves du Québec par rapport aux mathématiques. Il présente des tableaux qui alimenteront la réflexion autour des STEM au Québec. Deux bases de données ont été exploitées pour conduire ce projet sur le portrait du Québec en mathématiques. D’une part, les données issues des tests internationaux de l’OCDE en lien avec les mathématiques et la numératie; en particulier les tests de TIMSS et de PISA. D’autre part, les données du Bureau de la Coopération Interuniversitaire (BCI) afin de pouvoir se prononcer sur une éventuelle pénurie au Québec en termes de relève dans le domaine des mathématiques. Le rapport sur le portrait mathématique du Québec se présente en trois parties : une 1re partie principalement consacrée aux données issues des bases de données de l’OCDE concernant les élèves du primaire et du secondaire, une seconde partie misant sur l’exploitation des données du BCI avec le souci de circonscrire certains éléments d’interrogation sur les caractéristiques des étudiants dans le domaine des mathématiques, et, enfin, une troisième partie qui tend d’explorer l’arborescence de la pénurie dans le domaine des mathématiques une fois mise en contexte avec les domaines en lien avec les STIM.
