IT project success in perspective: systematic literature review analysis founded on the ADO, TCM and the PSALAR frameworks

Abstract

IT project success is critical, taking into consideration the vast sums of money that organizations and governments usually invest in the same. IT project success or failure has been an issue of concern to researchers in this space for many years. This is because IT projects are always on the ascendency with the growth of sophisticated communication and Telecom systems, the quest by industries to digitalize, and individuals’ craving to use smart devices for almost everything. IT project failure has dire consequences on the performance of any organization. Literature has tried several reviews, frameworks, and models, as well as quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods, to explain the concept of IT project success. Many researchers have pitched the argument in different dimensions to explain what they deem IT project success. By reviewing 46 studies based on the PSALAR framework, this study synthesizes the relationship between IT project success and its antecedents. Notably, we examine definitions of IT project success; hindrances to IT project success; and categorize IT project success based on their levels of origin using the Antecedents, Decision, Outcomes and Theories, Context, Methods frameworks.
