Multidimensional Child Poverty and Spatial Interdependencies in Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract

Child poverty emerges as a critical concern globally which accentuates the urgency of targeted interventions, emphasizing the pivotal role of addressing this problem for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 1 - No Poverty. This study delves into the multidimensional aspects of child poverty and its spatial interdependencies in Punjab, Pakistan. The data were gathered from the Bureau of Statistics Punjab and UNICEF’s Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2017-18. A range of household-level indicators including household income, parental education, child age, household size, and district-level factors such as early child development, multidimensional poverty, healthcare facilities, and drinking water availability, are examined by logistic and multilevel logistic regression models to explore the multilevel dynamics of child poverty. The findings indicate that higher household income, improved parental education, and household sizes are significantly linked with a reduction in child poverty. Spatial analysis using Univariate Local Moran’s I scatter plot, cluster map, and significance map uncovers notable spatial interdependencies of child poverty within districts. The results emphasize the need for targeted policy-driven healthcare, education, and economic interventions to address diverse aspects of child poverty, applicable to similar developing economies with common socioeconomic and geographical characteristics.
