This paper presents the most important results with regard to the evaluation of the law for improving the protection of flexible working time arrangements (Flexi II) that is geared towards paving the way to biography-oriented working time arrangements. The law aims to protect long-term working time accounts against bankruptcy, facilitate their transfers between companies and promote their incidence. Up to now companies and employees have been rather reluctant to make use of these accounts. One reason lies in the lack of knowledge about the possibilities offered by long-term working time accounts. Moreover, the administrative efforts and costs seem to hinder the spread of long-term time accounts. It should be noted that long-term accounts as defined by the law are not an instrument that is easy adapted to all employee groups. Time, as well as financial resources, is too unequally distributed between employees to make it possible for all employees to save enough credits in order to take leave at a later time, whether for necessary family care, advanced training or early retirement. For some employee groups, however, working time accounts can form a helpful building stone in demographically oriented working time policy.
