Flexible operation and integration of high-temperature heat pumps using large temperature glides

Abstract

With increasing target temperatures of industrial process heat demands, the efficiency lever of heat pumps decreases, and the influence of high initial investment costs and operational uncertainties on the strategic investment decision increases. In this trade-off for developing decarbonisation strategies, we propose a methodology that combines mixed-integer linear programming and pinch analysis to investigate the hybrid integration and optimal operation of heat pumps into existing systems. Through a case study, our findings reveal that even in scenarios with an elevated electricity-to-gas price ratio of 3, integrating a heat pump can result in marginal economic benefits of up to 6%. The proposed approach has the potential to provide valuable decision-making support for companies facing similar challenges in finding sustainable and cost-effective heat generation solutions.
