Tendencias en el desempeño financiero de las empresas multinacionales y la estrategia de traslado de actividades en la búsqueda de competitividad: una muestra del sector manufacturero en Puerto Rico

Abstract

Este artículo presenta las tendencias en el desempeño financiero y la toma de decisiones estratégicas sobre cierres y/o traslados de actividades de las empresas manufactureras establecidas en Puerto Rico durante el periodo de 2005 al 2010. Hace una comparación en el desempeño financiero en términos de indicadores de rentabilidad (ingreso neto, retorno del activo, retorno del patrimonio, retorno de la inversión, y “Ebit Margin”) y liquidez (deuda sobre el activo, deuda sobre el patrimonio y razón de liquidez) entre las empresas que realizaron ceses y/o cierres por traslados de actividades y las empresas que realizaron ceses y/o cierres por otras razones. La muestra fue seleccionada mediante los informes estadísticos de notificaciones de cierres manufactureros de la Administración de Desarrollo Laboral del Departamento del Trabajo y Recursos Humanos de Puerto Rico. Los datos financieros fueron obtenidos de la base de datos Compustat de Standard & Poor’s. Concluye que el traslado de actividades es realizado por las empresas considerando el potencial de mejorar el desempeño financiero y la competitividad, mientras el cierre de operaciones pudiera ser realizado con el propósito de mejorar la solvencia y encarar las situaciones económicas de las empresas.
