Abstract

This paper aims at a better understanding of the proliferation of management tools within organizations. What is the origin of such proliferation? How can it be organized? Are management tools interrelated? Qualitative research of a case featuring the adoption of multiple management tools shows that their proliferation may seem to be disordered at first sight. A closer look, however, reveals that tools are organized as a dynamic and structured portfolio of multiple management tools, where new management tools emerge alongside already existing ones. We are finally able to categorize management tools into substitute tools, reinforcing tools and complementary tools.
