Quartiers ethniques et croissance des gains des immigrants de sexe masculin de 1981 a 1996

Abstract

Dans le present document, nous examinons l'effet des quartiers sur la croissance des salaires ainsi que sur d'autres resultats obtenus sur le marche du travail par les immigrants de sexe masculin au Canada au moyen des donnees des recensements de 1981, 1986, 1991 et 1996. Meme si nous etablissons l'appartenance principalement d'apres le pays de naissance, nous examinons egalement l'appartenance ethnique, la langue et l'appartenance a une minorite visible pour determiner la robustesse des resultats. Conformement aux resultats observes aux Etats Unis, nous constatons que les quartiers fondees sur le pays de naissance ont un effet negatif sur la croissance des salaires des immigrants au cours d'une periode de dix ans. En outre, nous constatons que le modele de croissance salariale est robuste a differentes periodes et differentes annees de reference ainsi qu'a l'utilisation de la langue et de l'appartenance ethnique pour determiner le groupe d'appartenance. Lorsque nous utilisons le pays de naissance comme indice d'appartenance, nous constatons que l'exposition a un effet negatif sur la croissance des gains totaux et hebdomadaires ainsi que sur les salaires initiaux des cohortes d'entree. Meme s'il y a peu de preuves de l'effet des quartiers sur l'evolution de l'emploi, nous constatons que l'exposition a un effet negatif sur les taux d'emploi a l'arrivee au pays des cohortes les plus recentes. En outre, meme si l'effet global des quartiers sur la croissance des salaires est negatif, nous constatons que les quartiers ont un effet different sur differentes cohortes, a savoir, un effet positif sur la croissance des salaires des cohortes plus recentes et un effet negatif sur celle des salaires des cohortes anterieures.
