Persistencia Intergeneracional del Trabajo Infantil y Adolescente en Perú
[Intergenerational Persistence of Child Labor in Peru]

Abstract

Se estima que alrededor de 150 millones de niños en el mundo son víctimas del trabajo infantil (OIT, 2017). En este escenario, la literatura muestra de manera significativa que este fenómeno es transmisible entre generaciones, afirmando que la presencia del trabajo infantil es mas probable en los infantes cuando estuvo presente en los padres. A pesar de la contribución que aporta esta evidencia, se ha realizado un menor número de estudios que caractericen la intensidad de esta dinámica. En este trabajo, se evalúa cómo la intensidad del trabajo infantil en el jefe de hogar influencia de manera diferenciada a los infantes, en función a la edad en la que empezaron a trabajar. Para evaluar esta hipótesis, se utilizó información de la Encuesta de Trabajo Infantil 2015 (ETI) de Perú, estimando estos efectos mediante modelos probit bivariado. Los resultados encontrados sugieren que existe una persistencia intergeneracional del trabajo infantil que varía con la edad en la que empezó a trabajar el jefe de hogar. Asimismo, las estimaciones identifican un punto de quiebre en esta dinámica hacia nuevas generaciones, cuando el trabajo realizado en la infancia del jefe de hogar empieza a una edad suficientemente alta para no incrementar la probabilidad de trabajo infantil de la siguiente generación.
