La formation professionnelle et l'insertion sur le marché du travail : une analyse multicritères

Abstract

This paper examine whether entry into the labor market proceeds more efficiently if people are educated within the traditional vocational system or if they are trained as apprentices. Individual longitudinal data from the French survey " Jeunes et Carrières " (INSEE) conducted in 1997 are used. Four alternative measures are considered: the employment rate, the full-time employment rate, wages in 1997 and the starting wage in the first job that lasts longer than 6 months. Particular attention is paid to the role of the region and the level of qualification. This four criterion approach provides an assessment of the impact of the type of training, the region and the level of qualification both on employability and subsequent earnings. It appears that an apprenticeship increases employability and wages relative to vocational school. The school to work transition also depends on the level of qualification; further training facilitates overall access to a job, even if this additional training does not lead to an additional diploma. In this case, wages are not increased. The region plays an important role in the choice of the type of training and in the probability of working part-time.
