Quelles incitations pour la vente au détail ? Une analyse économique et financière des exploitations agricoles françaises

Abstract

Cet article s'intéresse aux facteurs économiques et financiers qui incitent les exploitations agricoles à écouler toute ou partie de leur production au détail. Cette pratique correspond à une forme de circuit court qui connaît à l'heure actuelle un regain d'intérêt car il se voit parée de nombreuses vertus associées au développement durable : valorisation du travail des producteurs ou encore qualité des produits. A partir des données du RICA 2011, nous identifions les caractéristiques économiques et financières des exploitations agricoles qui décident d'écouler toute ou partie de leur production au détail. Un accent particulier est porté sur les exploitations spécialisées en viticulture et arboriculture qui sont utilisent le plus ce mode de distribution. Au-delà des seuls paramètres structurels traditionnellement étudiés par la littérature, l'analyse économique et financière offre un cadre pertinent afin de comprendre les motivations des agriculteurs. Grâce à une analyse statistique et une modélisation économétrique, nous établissons le profil contrasté des exploitations pratiquant la vente au détail : de grande taille, elles se caractérisent par la présence d'une importante main d'œuvre et requièrent la présence d'importants actifs financiers. En dépit de la mise en évidence d'importantes disparités sectorielles, le point commun de ces exploitations est d'utiliser moins de produits phytosanitaires, ce qui est en phase avec le signal envoyé d'une vente supposée être de qualité puisque de proximité. Des implications en termes de politique publique peuvent ainsi être suggérées.
