Les effets de la capacité physique sur l’acquisition des compétences : une application au cas de Madagascar

Abstract

Nous présentons une étude économétrique de l’effet des conditions nutritionnelles de long terme sur la réussite scolaire. Nous contrôlons les éventuels biais de sélectivité, qui sont relativement fréquents dans cette littérature, (i) soit en restreignant notre échantillon, (ii) soit en mettant en oeuvre une procédure de Heckman à deux étapes. Dans le cas de Madagascar, auquel est appliquée notre étude, nous montrons sans ambiguïté que la taille est positivement et significativement liée aux résultats scolaires. Ce constat démontre que les investissements sanitaires ne sont pas seulement favorables au bien être mais affectent également la rentabilité des investissements éducatifs._________________________________ We present an econometric analysis of the effect of long term nutritional conditions on school achievement. We control potential selectivity bias, which is common in this literature, (i) either by restricting the sample, (ii) or by applying a two step Heckman procedure. For Malagasy data, we show without ambiguity that height is positively and significantly linked to school success. This statement proves that health investments are not only benefic to well being but that they also affect the rate of return of educational investments.
