Abstract

A framework for examining the competitiveness of firms in the food and agribusiness sector based on the firm's view of the vertical production-marketing system is offered- Recent examples are used to illustrate the evolution of perspectives employed by firms in the sector away from the producer towards the consumer. The need for a systems perspective in addressing competitiveness is stressed throughout the article. Areas for further research are suggested.
