Knowledge, Capabilities and Manufacturing Innovation: A USA-Europe Comparison

Abstract

Roper S., Youtie J., Shapira P. and Fernandez-Ribas A. Knowledge, capabilities and manufacturing innovation: a USA-Europe comparison, Regional Studies. This paper presents a comparative analysis of factors contributing to the innovation performance of manufacturing firms in Georgia (USA), Wales (UK), the West Midlands (UK), and Catalonia (Spain). Enabled by comparable survey data, multivariate probit models are developed to estimate how various types of firms' innovative activities are influenced by links to external knowledge sources, internal resources, absorptive capacity, and public innovation support. The results suggest the potential for mutual learning. For the European study regions there are insights about how universities in Georgia support innovation. For Georgia and Catalonia there are lessons from UK firms about better capturing potential complementarities between innovation activities. Cet article cherche a presenter une analyse comparative des facteurs qui contribuent a la performance de l'innovation des entreprises industrielles en Georgie (aux E-U), aux Pays de Galles (au R-U), dans les West Midlands (au R-U), et en Catalogne (en Espagne). A partir des enquetes qui fournissent des donnees comparables, on construit des modeles du type probit a plusieurs variables afin d'estimer comment les activites innovatrices des diverses types d'entreprises se voient influencer par des liens avec des sources de connaissance externes, des ressources internes, la capacite d'absorption et le soutien publique en faveur de l'innovation. Les resultats laissent supposer un potentiel d'apprentissage commun. Pour les regions europeennes qui figurent dans l'etude, il y a des apercus sur la facon dont les universites situees en Georgie soutiennent l'innovation. Pour la Georgie et la Catalogne, il y a des lecons a tirer des entreprises situees au R-U quant a la saisie efficace des complementarites potentielles des activites innovatrices. Mit Hilfe von vergleichbaren Erhebungsdaten entwickeln wir multivariate Probit-Modelle, um abzuschatzen, wie die innovativen Aktivitaten verschiedener Arten von Firmen durch die Verknupfungen zu externen Wissensquellen, internen Ressourcen, absorptiver Kapazitat und offentlicher Innovationsunterstutzung beeinflusst werden. Unsere Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass die Regionen voneinander lernen konnen. Fur die europaischen Regionen der Studie gibt es Einblicke, wie die Universitaten in Georgia die Innovation unterstutzen. In Georgia und Katalonien kann vom Beispiel der britischen Firmen gelernt werden, wie sich potenzielle Komplementaritaten innerhalb der Innovationsaktivitaten besser nutzen lassen. Es werden zusatzliche Implikationen zur Messung von Innovation und zur Entwicklung einer Wissensbasis erortert. En este articulo presentamos un analisis comparativo de los factores que contribuyen al rendimiento de innovacion de empresas manufactureras en Georgia (EE.UU.), Gales (RU), West Midlands (RU), y Cataluna (Espana). Con ayuda de datos de estudios comparables, desarrollamos modelos probit de multivarianza para calcular de que modo los diferentes tipos de actividades innovadoras de las empresas estan influenciadas por los vinculos con fuentes externas de conocimiento, fuentes internas, capacidad absorbente y soporte publico de innovacion. Nuestros resultados indican que existe la posibilidad de un aprendizaje mutuo. Para las regiones europeas del estudio se puede aprender de que modo las universidades en Georgia fomentan la innovacion. Georgia y Cataluna podrian aprender de las empresas britanicas a captar mejor las posibles complementariedades entre las actividades de innovacion. Analizamos tambien las implicaciones adicionales para la medicion de la innovacion y el desarrollo de bases de conocimiento.
