Abstract

This study aims to provide an overview of recent developments in the export performance and international competitiveness of one of the less developed regions in Southern Italy: Calabria. After computing the comparative advantages/disadvantages of the region, a double empirical approach based on time series and panel estimations has been adopted to assess the extent to which price competitiveness and foreign income affect export behaviour at the regional level. The analysis shows that Calabria presents a specialization structure focused on a few product categories mainly in agro-food, wood, and chemical products, which condition its international competitiveness. The finding reveals that a 1 per cent drop in price competitiveness has caused a contraction in regional exports by 1.59-1.76 per cent, and a 1 per cent decrease in foreign income has brought about a narrowing of exports by 0.90- 1.27 per cent. This indicates that the erosion of price competitiveness plays a larger role than income in affecting export performance.
