Abstract

[eng] The Use Rates of Productive Capacities Reflect Fluctuations in the Overall Economic Climate - The rates at which industrial productive capacities are used, which can be defined as the difference between actual production and potential production, are a good economic indicator of the disequilibrium between supply and demand on the market for goods. Their evolution reveals the present economic fluctuations both in the condition and the development of the productive system, and in the pressures that this system is subjected to. From the strong pressures which accompanied the economic growth of the sixties, through the two oil crises in the seventies, to the recovery of economic expansion since 1987, the long term evolution of equipment use rates throws light on the recent history of the French economy. . In spite of a few discrepancies, a comparison between standardized series for eight industrialized countries brings to the fore similarities in the evolution of the economic environment, and the close interrelationship between various economies. No country can keep itself apart from the economic climate prevalent in its main trading partners for a long period of time.
