Abstract

[eng] The Margins of Industrial Excess Capacity - Margins of excess capacity vary greatly from one industrial sector to the next, and between large and small firms. For example, since the 1974 rupture, approximately one entreprise in five operates at full capacity. The average margins that have often been analysed mask a lot of dispersion among firms. This dispersion is the object of this study.. The additional production possible with extra labor is larger and less variable for small than large firms. Of course, when demand grows, this dispersion narrows. But there always remain firms with excess capacity. One wonders therefore whether the mean excess capacity does not overestimate the potential addition to supply under current market conditions.
