Abstract

[eng] Ageing and Salary : an Individual Approach - What is the trend in an individual's salary? What is the impact of mobility — does it mean an increase in salary? What is the role of ageing — does the salary begin to diminish beyond a certain age? These are the three questions which this article tries to answer. Ordinarily, it is impossible to provide an answer as individual wage-earners are not followed throughout their lives. Knowing the average salaries for different social categories from one year to the next (which are provided by the statistics based on yearly salary statements furnished by employers) does not, in fact, shed light on these questions, for the trends of individual salaries differ considerably from those of average salaries per social category. This study was made possible by a permanent sampling of wage-earners based on the years 1970 and 1975. Although the results were marked by the economic crisis of this period, they nevertheless seriously call into question a number of the accepted ideas about salary trends.
