Seaport-performance tools: an analysis of the international literature

Abstract

This study analyses the international scientific literature on seaport-performance evaluation. Our aim is to further advance research in this area, by identifying theoretical and empirical opportunities. The research is exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach, using the method of action research based on secondary data. Furthermore, we use the Knowledge Development Process—Constructivist (ProKnow-C), which identified 6053 articles from the databases of Web of Science, Scopus, Proquest, Ebsco, Science Direct and Emerald. After applying filters and ProKnow-C, the final sample (i.e. bibliographic portfolio) contained 31 scientifically recognised and relevant articles. The main results of this study show that (i) the author Barros and the Journal of Maritime Economics and Logistics appear most frequently in the literature, (ii) data envelopment analysis is the most frequently used performance-evaluation technique and (iii) the most commonly used performance indicators focus on measuring seaport efficiency, based on operational aspects, and they are applied in a mostly generic manner, without considering the particularities of each context.
