Abstract

With the ecological awareness throughout the world by the cause of global warming, both waste management and decreasing energy consumption have been a complication. Energy saving and generating techniques are being studied by plenty of organizations and institutes as well as academia. On the other hand, even for smallest municipalities, waste management is shifting into an obligation. Obtaining energy from biomass provides one positive solution for both problems; it prevents the wastes piling over and also provides energy. As a small city on the west coast of Turkey, Aydin, has its own waste disposal facility, yet, the municipality requires to validate the future existence of the existing facility together with evaluating the Waste-to-Energy facility alternative. This study utilizes Bayesian networks in order to evaluate optimum conditions for alternatives in waste management in addition to analyzing the coherence of the city specifications with the decision alternatives. It is observed that the city is adaptive to both decisions yet the change in scenarios also lead to changes in decisions.
