Impact of population aging on corporate digital transformation strategies: An empirical investigation based on population census data from various provinces in China

Abstract

Given an aging population, it is crucial to examine how digital transformation affects enterprises. This study uses data from the 2011–2021 Chinese population census and A-share listed companies to examine how aging directly hampers financial support and decision-making for digital transformation. It also explores its indirect effects through financial strategies and management perspectives. The study indicates that aging impacts digital transformation more in nonstate-owned and small to medium-sized enterprises, offering strategic insights for policymakers.
