Éducation, destruction des emplois et performance du marché du travail dans un modèle d'appariement

Abstract

Little attention has been paid in the theoretical literature to the fact that empirically observed differences in unemployment rates by education groups reflect more underlying differences in incidence rather than in duration of unemployment. This paper closes the gap between the theory and the evidence. We analyse educational investments in a matching environment with endogeneous job creation and job destruction. We obtain the following set of results : (i) unlike standard matching models of human capital investments, unemployment and education are not trivially related ; (ii) firing costs may lead to a low skill trap ; (iii) the market outcome is generally inefficient and employment protection may improve welfare.
