Abstract

[eng] In the context of European Union enlargement, we use GMM on panel data to estimate labor-demand adjustment costs for French and Czech firms over the period 1993-1998. We find some structural differences between the two labor markets. The dynamics of French firms’ labor demand depend on non-trivial adjustment costs with a fixed part and an asymmetric structure. For Czech firms, instead, these costs appear to be minimal or even non-existent – implying a different labor-market structure from that of France. The observed differentials suggest that the Czech Republic is able to absorb the shock of its entry into the European Union.
