A comparative analysis of the evolution of gender wage discrimination: Spain vs. Galicia

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the degree of female wage discrimination, its evolution over time and its distribution for socio‐economic groups in the Galician region with respect to the rest of Spain. First we will try to explain the causes of the gender wage differential, and second, we will discuss the evolution of the wage gap between 1995 and 2002 in order to shed light on the potential factors of wage discrimination persistence in Galicia and Spain. Finally, we will examine the distribution of the degree of discrimination by using the discrimination curve and discrimination indexes. Resumen Este artículo busca analizar el grado de discriminación salarial de la mujer, su evolución en el tiempo y su distribución en grupos socioeconómicos en la región de Galicia con respecto al resto de España. Primero intentaremos explicar las causas del diferencial salarial por causa del género, y a continuación discutiremos la evolución del diferencial salarial entre 1990 y 2002 para poder aclarar los factores potenciales de la persistencia de la discriminación salarial en Galicia y en España. Finalmente, examinaremos la distribución del grado de discriminación utilizando la Curva de discriminación e índices de discriminación.
