Oferta de trabajo infantil y el trabajo en los quehaceres del hogar

Abstract

Tradicionalmente se ha estudiado el problema del trabajo infantil como la contraparte a la asistencia a la escuela. Sin embargo, la mayoría de estudios ha ignorado la importancia que puede tener el trabajo en quehaceres del hogar desempeñado por menores de edad en el hogar. Dado que los niños a partir de cierta edad pueden desempeñar estas actividades, y dado que el trabajo infantil es una actividad oculta y por lo general fuera de la legalidad, es posible que dentro de una familia los menores de edad sustituyan a sus padres en las labores domésticas lo que permitiría a los padres trabajar más horas para incrementar los ingresos familiares. Es por ello que el estudio de la oferta de trabajo infantil no puede ir desligada de un estudio de los determinantes de la demanda por trabajo en quehaceres del hogar desempeñado por los menores de edad del propio hogar. En la presente investigación se propone que los salarios de los padres, los ingresos de los niños trabajadores y los demás componentes de los ingresos familiares determinan la asignación del tiempo de los niños entre trabajar en una actividad económica (remunerada), trabajar realizando actividades domésticas en su hogar o estudiar y/o descansar. Los resultados econométricos confirman que las variables mencionadas –entre otras– determinan la cantidad de horas que los niños dedican a los quehaceres del hogar y al trabajo remunerado. Este estudio se desarrolló como resultado del VI Concurso Anual de Investigación CIES 2004, con el auspicio de la Agencia Canadiense para el Desarrollo Internacional (ACDI) y el Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo (IDRC, por sus siglas en inglés).
