Analysing the Creativity of the Hungarian Micro-regions

Abstract

In the knowledge-based economy, the ability to attract and retain highly skilled labour is perceived as crucial to the current and future prosperity of micro-regions as well as regions and entire nations. It can be proved, that the quality of human resources and economic development are in very close connection with each other. Furthermore, according to the well known theory of Richard Florida, economic development can be traced back to the quality of the human capital. Florida argues, that the knowledge-based economy is driven by the creative class, which's spatial concentration can be measured by Florida's methodology, developed to examine the creative class of the USA. The aim of the study is to classify the 174 Hungarian micro-regions by the concentration of the creative class. The indicator system of the analysis as well as the logical framework of the analysis have been developed attending to the edifications of many international adaptation of Florida's methodology. To carry out the classification, multivariate statistical methods have been carried out, like Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) and Hierarchical cluster analysis.
