Abstract

"The results of the annual IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees indicate significant signs of progress in refugees’ labor market integration. However, there are also pronounced gender differences: among refugees who arrived in Germany since 2013 and have lived here for at least five years, 60 percent of men and 28 percent of women are gainfully employed. Stronger incentives and support offers encouraging investments in Germany-specific qualifications (such as language skills or vocational and further education) are necessary to increase refugees’ labor market participation. This applies particularly to refugee women, for whom it is challenging or even impossible to transfer their qualifications gained in their home country to the regulated German labor market. An additional obstacle to the labor market integration of refugee women is that almost three-quarters of them have (often small) children. In this regard, a tailored childcare infrastructure is essential for female refugees to enable their participation in education and the labor market." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
