La différenciation des produits touristiques : le whale watching dans le sud-ouest de l'océan Indien

Abstract

La mégafaune marine migratrice du sud-ouest de l'océan Indien participe à faire de cette zone un hot spot de la biodiversité. D'un point de vue économique, ce patrimoine naturel y représente une opportunité de croissance du secteur du tourisme, et plus précisément de l'écotourisme. En effet, l'observation des animaux dans leur milieu naturel fait l'objet d'une constante progression. Ainsi, le whale watching, c'est-à-dire l'observation des baleines, est un secteur d'activité économique qui est en train de se structurer grâce à un réseau d'opérateurs. En mobilisant quelques concepts de la théorie économique, il est proposé ici de poser quelques jalons pour mieux comprendre les caractéristiques du whale watching, d'en décrire les principales formes d'organisation industrielle et d'en inférer quelques perspectives de développement à Madagascar, Maurice et La Réunion.
