Abstract

Many small developing islands have opted to develop through tourism specialization. A sensible choice for places ill-fitted for manufacturing activities and endowed with natural tourism assets raises long term issues Is this growth sustainable ? A review of theoretical and empirical analysis on the topic shows that tourism specialization means short term growth. In the long run, its effects are ambiguous. Researchers still have to carry on with their studies in order to better understand the impact of tourism specialization on growth.
