Abstract

The emergence of genetically modified plants, in Europe, led to important debates and particularly about the consumption of genetically modified foods. In this context, voluntary organizations seemed to be an important actor in the diffusion of information on the subject, influencing the individual behaviours of the consumers. With data from the Eurobarometer 58.0, multivariate probit was used to specify the importance of trust in environmental associations and voluntary organizations on the acceptance of (and the resistance to) genetically modified foods on behalf of the "ordinary citizens". Finally, we discuss the principal stylized facts thus characterized. Our approach confirms the key results from the previous researches in consumer theory : personal values and adding consideration of social networks are important determinants of resistance (or acceptance) to GMO.
