Abstract

The creation and growth of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the challenges to "economic globalization" mark the power of liberal and neo-classical economics. The idea that was put forward at the time was that the opening of borders would necessarily lead to generalized economic development, within the framework of renewed peace. However, 20 years after the creation of the WTO, international agreements are increasingly contested and social and societal inequalities have grown over the period. UNCTAD, which had developed the idea of a new international economic order, has lost (definitively?) its power to question and world poverty has not been overcome. The years to come will undoubtedly increase this dissatisfaction of States and will highlight the power relations linked to the monopolization of raw materials and to the decisive influence of multinational firms concerned only with the personal interests of shareholders who are not very eager to modify the production relations from which they benefit.
