Abstract

The history of economic thought teaches us that economists have always been very divided on the issue of international security, conflict and war. The question of the economic system has always been put forward, some considering that liberal capitalism leads to situations of equilibrium and peace, others denouncing the exploitation of man by man or imperialism. The arms race has no economic basis as such, but it has a cost that is often justified by questions of national security. Econometric analyses have provided some short-term information on the influence of military expenditure on the major economic aggregates, but the results are often too heterogeneous, depending on the period or region, to constitute reliable long-term economic results.
