Abstract

When Paul Kennedy spoke of the decline of empires, and in particular of the coming decline of the United States, many thoughts followed this analysis. Today, international stability, open markets and international cooperation depend on Washington's policies, in a cooperation strongly influenced by American military, ideological, technological and economic power. However, by acting as the world's policeman, the US economy is burdened and becomes less and less competitive. This analysis is contested and questionable, although the hypothesis is not utopian either.
