Abstract

Moins étudiées que les moyennes et les grandes exploitations agricoles (EA), les petites EA représentent tout de même plus de 36% des exploitations agricoles de la France métropolitaine en 2010. L'objectif de cet article est de construire statistiquement une typologie des petites exploitations agricoles à partir des données du recensement agricole de 2010, et de caractériser les groupes obtenus. Nous choisissons d'identifier les petites exploitations sur la base du critère économique de Production brute standard inférieure à 25 000€. Nous utilisons une méthode de clustering mixte associant k-means et classification ascendante hiérarchique pour identifier cinq groupes cohérents de petites exploitations. Nous proposons de caractériser ainsi cinq stratégies d'exploitation : avoir un système d'exploitation très simplifié et tourné vers l'autoconsommation ; conserver un patrimoine familial ; maintenir une petite activité agricole rémunératrice ; maintenir et développer une activité agricole à plein temps, et enfin être en transition. Cette typologie permet de retrouver la plupart des grandes catégories de petites exploitations déjà identifiées dans la littérature plus qualitative.
